The art of Web Design
Don’t we love those cool looking websites! You know the ones. Those that have a cool tab or button or maybe a very sweet design that makes you go “oh that’s so neat”. Well, those sites, don’t just spontaneously appear on the internet, there is a process to them and people that spend hours upon hour on Photoshop and PHP to make some amazing looking websites. These people are called web designers and they’re borderline artists. So today we wanted to bring you some cool facts about web design.
Web Design’s Dark Ages
Did you know that web design had its very own dark ages? No, we don’t mean that web designers went on holy web designer crusades and had web designer kings who ruled over them. The web design dark ages were a bit closer to our times. It was the year 1989 of our web designer lord and web design was made by keys and tabulation like Tab Key. The screens were pitch black and only e few monochrome pixels existed, so hence the name Dark Ages.
Lerdorf the bringer of PHP
Rasmus Lerdorf, the messiah of web development sent by the developer gods to bring unto the world the beautiful language of PHP, initially developed it to manage his own personal site (scratch that messiah part). Then he said let there be PHP and he saw that it was good and said let it spread across the world towards all web developers and on the fateful year of 1997 the official version of PHP was released.
Tim Bernes-Lee the creator
Sure, Lerdorf was heaven sent for web designers, but his work wouldn’t even have existed without the creation of the one above all, the grand deity of the internet, the one, and only Tim Bernes-Lee. Bernes-Lee created the first ever web page using HTML. He is the alpha (No, not the omega).
The hero of web design
Thomas Knoll, that’s the name of the hero of all web designers everywhere. Where would they be without him? When web designers gather together in the annual designer jousting and web gladiatorial championship (that’s probably not a thing, but it should be, please make it a real thing), they make a toast in his name. Knoll is the man that invented the holy grail of web designer programs, Photoshop (you probably heard of it), but Knoll didn’t intend to call it Photoshop, no he had another name in mind. You see the name he had chosen was none other than ImagePro. Yeah, sounds weird, but alas that name was already taken, so he said “fine, Photoshop it is then, are you, happy mom?” (Probably not). Then Adobe bought it in 89 and the rest is history.
Just Google it
Google you beautiful thing you. What did people do before you? How did they find things? Studying, going to the library? Ha-ha, silly people. Google started out as a research project in 1996 (has it been that long), by founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Page and Brin were both studying at the Stanford University of California. Page and Brin had a dream, to make a search engine that ranked websites as per the number of websites connected to that website. They dreamed of making the most powerful search engine in the world and they succeeded. One engine to rule them all.
So those were some cool facts about web design (or some cool facts about its beginning). We will bring you more cool facts about the web and everything related to it almost every day. Until then, live long and surf the web.
